What Is AAHA?

AAHA stands for the American Animal Hospital Association. It’s the only organization that accredits companion-animal veterinary hospitals in the United States and Canada. Founded more than 90 years ago, AAHA develops detailed standards of care and evaluates practices against them.

Why It’s Rarer Than You’d Think

Here’s what surprises most pet owners: unlike human hospitals, where accreditation is mandatory, veterinary accreditation is completely voluntary. A clinic can legally operate without it. Because the process is so rigorous, only about 15 percent of veterinary practices in the U.S. and Canada are AAHA-accredited. To earn it, a hospital is evaluated on more than 900 standards — and must pass a comprehensive on-site evaluation every three years to keep it.

Those standards aren’t abstract — they show up in your pet’s everyday care. AAHA evaluates areas including:
