How Is a CT Scan Different From an X-Ray?

A standard X-ray produces a flat, two-dimensional image — useful for many things, but limited when structures overlap. A CT scanner takes a rapid series of images and combines them into a detailed cross-sectional and 3D picture. That extra detail lets your veterinarian see fine bone structures, soft tissues, and abnormalities with far greater clarity, which is especially valuable for complex problems and for planning surgery.

When CT Imaging Is Especially Helpful

Your veterinarian may recommend a CT scan in situations such as:

• Complex or hard-to-see fractures, and planning for orthopedic surgery
• Persistent nasal or sinus problems, chronic ear disease, or issues in the skull
• Evaluating and staging cancer, including checking whether disease has spread
• Spinal problems and certain neurological concerns
• Detailed views of the chest or abdomen when X-rays leave questions

What to Expect

Because a CT scan requires your pet to stay completely still, it’s usually done under light sedation or brief general anesthesia.
